The philosophy of aubergine

  • To life ordinary life artfully is to have this sensibility about the things in daily life, to live more intuitively and to be willing to surrender a measure of our rationality and control in return for gifts of the soul. - Thomas Moore

9 true things about me and one lie

This is my 300th post to this blog.  Wow.  I know I haven't been posting a lot here lately, but I'm going to work on that.  I miss writing here.  I've been taking a writing class since January in the format of Natalie Goldberg's writing practice, and I'm having a lot of fun and getting more confident with my voice and style.  I'm also writing about a lot of personal stuff that I don't really want to post to the web, but some of it is stories that I would like to share.  So look forward to seeing more of that around here in the coming weeks.

For now, here's something fun.  Nine of these things are true, and one is completely made up.  Which one is the lie?

1. I used to be a competition tap dancer.

2. When I was 18 I rebuilt the engine of my 1959 Chevy Bel Air.

3. I didn't learn how to walk until I was over a year old and rolled off the changing table, breaking my arm.  The next day I got up and walked across the room.

4. In fifth grade I played the saxophone in the school band, and later I switched to flute, but really I just wanted to learn to play the drums.

5. I only had 3 wisdom teeth.

6.  I used the train of the wedding gown that my grandmother made for my mother to make a corset that I wore under a red silk dress when I got married.

7. My first word was "cat."

8. From the age of 2 until I was 9 we lived "off the grid".  For some of that time we had no electricity.  We were on well water and disconnected from the city sewer and garbage systems.  We raised goats for milk and chickens for eggs and grew the bulk of our vegetables in our garden.

9. My first job was in the Morgan Hill Public Library when I was 15 1/2.  I worked there until I moved away for college.

10. I have a BA degree in fine art.

okay, this list is some kind of fantastic! the fact that nine are true makes me smile...

i am new visiting here but i am going to guess #7.

um... were you really a competitive tap dancer?

Hee hee. I like this game! The lap dancing thing is too suprising not to be true, and I too didn't walk until well after age one. I'm guessing it's number 7. First word 'cat'? Thanks for the smile :-)

I've never visited here before...but this is fun...I think that the one about rebuilding the engine is false.

Oh and I love your photo at the top of the eggplants...gorgeous.

oh my, dona. a test of our friendship. the newlywed game, but with friends.....this is hard too, darn it. i know some to definitely be true because I just know those stories from hearing them, but the one false one????? my first instinct was rebuilding the engine even tho that is not too far fetched for you. i am sure you are entirely capable. my second instinct was speaking the word 'cat' first which isn't that far fetched either since we know you love cats. hahaha anyway, i should go with my first instinct. and one of the comments above is about you _lap_ dancing. I think it was a typo but sure does make this all More Fun! hahahaha
Love you
Miss you
Can't wait to see you and spend time together....

RE #4: It's NEVER too late to learn the drums!! I got a set for my 35th birthday from my hubby and I'm in lessons with a cool musician and I can already do several backbeats for my guitarist son. Mind you, my teenager is not impressed AT ALL, but I'm sure having fun! Your #8 doesn't sound too fun though--ack! no electricity and goat's milk were not pleasant, but remind me of visiting one of my grandmas!

It's the tap dancing thing, right? It's gotta be the tap dancing...that's the lie.

Ok, then.

I've narrowed it down to #4, #5, #7 or #9. Any of those the lie?

I'm going with the tap dancing. It was great to catch up at AF, in the Bagby class for sure. And also, thanks so much for taking my class! You were brilliant (of course), a star, which I knew before you even put brush to board. Hope you enjoyed it.

oooh i want you to expand on all of these - cool list i have no idea which one is the lie but i can't wait to find out! i haven't got my stuff back from j yet so nope, haven't finished my calender!!! great to hang out at artfest, can't wait till next year when i am child free!!

Well, I'm your mom and I had trouble figuring out which one of your ten attributes was a lie. They all sound like you to me. The only one I could come up with was that you loved to tap dance, but not to compete. So perhaps #1 is untrue.

My wonderful daughter. You are more than the sum of all these things, but all of these things are definitely part of you.

I love you.
