"I could only protect one of us and I chose, for once, myself."

Yes yes yes. It is so hard for me to do this, to protect my heart knowing that someone else's heart will be hurt by my doing so. But it is so deeply important.

"I say less, I am less brave. I feel words clattering against the back of my teeth and leave them there."

I know this feeling, too, and as I read this have the sensation of the 'curling into myself' I experience when it happens. I know I've been on the other side of this, too and I bristle at the thought; I never want to make anyone else feel small.

I'm so honored to have been there to bear witness to the 'flow' of your story.

Yes, I see this side of it, too. Reading your words made me think of times like this in my own life. But more than that--you made me wonder how often I've been the one who's been impatient or interrupted a friend mid-story. Ugh. It's horrible to contemplate, but necessary, too, so I can avoid it and offer, instead, an understanding ear.
